Product Description

African - Shirt Green/Purple/Red/Blue/Black Kente Cloth
Hand Made in Africa.

This beautiful 100% cotton shirt is a true African product, the material is hand dyed in West Africa, The material is then taken to South Africa and the shirt is made. These shirts are styled after the shirts President Mandela wears, they are called Madiba shirts, after him.

This particular shirt has a Mandarin collar.

Kente cloth was developed in the 17th Century by the Ashanti people. Legend has it that the art of weaving kente was learned by observing a spider weaving its web. Kente was reserved for special occasions to be worn by royalty.

The yarns are spun from cotton and silk. Today rayon is also used. Each cloth has a motif & pattern with a special name and meaning. Names and meanings are based on important events, social codes of conduct, human behavior to name a few. The patterns come in beautiful geometric designs. The colors of kente have symbolic meanings. Women normally wear the lighter colors. Men wear strong colors such as maroon, black, navy, purple and dark green.
